Earlier it was established by the Somwarpet Taluk Education Society® in July 1981 & affiliated to Mangalore University, with the nomenclature, ‘B.T. Chanaiah Gowramma College’, later it came under the ambit of government’s grant-in-aid with effect 01-07-1986. Then the College was taken over by the Government of Karnakata on 27-11-2006 vide its Order No. ED/201/UPC/2009, Bangalore, dated 06-07-2011 and thus became a government college, with the name ‘B.T. CHANAIAH GOWRAMMA GOVERNMENT FIRST GRADE COLLEGE, SOMWARPET,’ governed by the Department of Collegiate Education.
