The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) is an autonomous organization set up in 1961 by the Government of India to assist and advise the Central and State Governments on policies and programmes for qualitative improvement in school education.

The NCERT's main functions are to:

  • Undertake, promote and coordinate research in areas related to school education.
  • Prepare and publish model textbooks, supplementary material, newsletters, journals and develops educational kits, multimedia digital materials, etc.
  • Organize pre-service and in-service training of teachers.
  • Develop and implement innovative educational programmes.
  • Provide advisory and technical services to the Central and State Governments.

The NCERT has its headquarters in New Delhi and has four regional institutes located at Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Guwahati, and Mysore. It also has a number of constituent units located in different parts of the country.

The NCERT plays a vital role in the development of school education in India. Its textbooks and other educational materials are used by millions of students across the country. The NCERT also provides training to teachers and develops innovative educational programmes.

  • Developed and implemented the National Curriculum Framework (NCF), which is the guiding framework for school education in India.

  • Developed and implemented a number of innovative educational programmes, such as the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), the Mid-Day Meal Scheme, and the Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA).
  • Provided training to millions of teachers across the country.
  • Developed and disseminated a wide range of educational materials, such as textbooks, supplementary readers, teachers' guides, and multimedia materials.
