Ongoing R&D Activities :The department is nationally recognized as a center for Research in Nanotechnology. Several Research Projects are in Progress in Semiconductor Nanooptics funded by DAE, DST, UGC and CSIR.

About Department :

The department of Applied Physics was established in 1956 in S.G.S. Institute of Technology and Science, Indore, to teach both theoretical and experimental Physics to all the students of various engineering undergraduate courses. Subsequently, it was acutely felt that a Postgraduate course with adequate engineering course contents could provide potentiality in the job market in various engineering and technological organization. To meet this demand, in 1969, the department introduced the course of M.Sc. in applied physics. The department also conducted research work in various areas of physics and applied physics under the ablest leadership of Late Professor M. R. Bhidey. At present, the department has mobilised its maximum research activities in the areas of Laser Physics, Optical Electronics, Fiber Optics and Nonlinear Optics. Several research projects funded by national funding agencies such as AICTE, DST, CSIR, DAE and UGC are being conducted successfully by the faculty members in the above front line areas.

Recently, Lasers and optical electronics have opened up many new opportunities and frontiers of technology. They have tremendous scope of application in industry, medicine, defence, meteorology, optical communication and information processing. Modern communication systems are at the threshold of transformation to fiber optic based optical communication systems. Laser and optical electronics based newer and newer technologies and products are coming up at a mind bogling speed ! This technological reality has created the demand of large manpower well trained in laser and optical electronics. Most appropriately, during the VIII five-year plan, Science Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (SAC-PM) approved a plan to strengthen teaching and R&D activities in the field of Laser science & technology and their applications. A National Laser Programme was evolved with the objective of manpower training in the field of laser science and technology, development of laser technology in the country and promotion of laser application in basic research, industry and medicine. Under this programme, the Department of Applied Physics, SGSITS has been identified to run M.Tech programme in optoelectronics with specialisation in optical communication. Since its inception in the year 1995, the M. Tech programme is being run in the department with active supports from Centre for Advanced Technology, Indore. Senior Physicist and technologists of CAT are taking theory class and supervising M.Sc. & M.Tech Project work. Needless to say, the department has now adequate resource to take up any new training and research activities in the field of laser science, optical electronics and related areas. Two research scholars have been working in the field of experimental investigations of (i) Nonlinear Optical Effects and (ii) Low Coherence Optical Tomography for their Ph.D. degrees.

Strength of the Department :

Almost 75% of the faculty members are very young, energetic and motivated. Their research efforts go hand in hand with that of the committed full time research scholars. A large number of the Ph. D. theses produced in the last 5-6 years manifest the quantum of research of International Standard.

Started in 1973, Department of Industrial and Production Engineering, is today one of largest department of the institute. The department is equipped with learned faculty and modern facilities. The department has a well-equipped central workshop that imparts basic training in various manufacturing processes. The department is also equipped with modern laboratories of CAD/CAE, FMS, Industrial Inspection, Industrial Engineering, Quantitative Techniques and, Metal Cutting and Machine Tools.

Faculty members have published more than 50 papers in the last three years, and have authored number of books, which are popular in many engineering curriculum across the country. Recently department has organised a two day National Workshop on “Product Lifecycle Engineering and Management” on 12-13 September 2007.

The Department of Electronics & Telecommunication Engg. was established in 1972 . It offers Under Graduate course (B.E.) in the field of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, and a Post Graduate course (M.E.) with special emphasis on Telecommunication networks since 2003. The UG course has been AICTE accrediated in 2003. The department is equipped with the state-of-art equipments and has well developed laboratories in the related fields. The department has its own LAN with Novel Netware, Windows-NT and Linux servers (and is connected to the Institute LAN which has radio link with CAT for internet access). The department was selected for project IMPACT, supported by World Bank, Swiss Dev. Corporation (SDC) and Department Of Electronics (now named as Ministry of Information Technology ) Government of India, during 1991 to 1996. The project was aimed at enhancing educational facilities to provide quality technical man power. Laboratory equipments and educational material worth Rs. 75 lacs were provided under this project .

The department also participated in IMPACT-SSS project of MIT, Govt. of India during 1997 to 2002.The Department has been awarded ISO-9001:1994 certificatification in December 2000 jointly with the Department of Computer Engg. and Department of Electronics and Instrumentation Engg. of the Institute.

The department has been accreditated by AICTE in 2004. The department has been receiving grants from various Government agencies for upgradation and modernization of the laboratories. The department has R&D in the field of modeling and analysis of high speed local area networks, telecommunication switching systems, digital signal processing, optical communication, embedded system etc. Many students and faculty members of the department have received Young Scientist and other prestigious awards . Many alumni of the department have pursued M.Tech. and Ph.D. studies in various IITs and abroad after securing high percentile in GATE & GRE.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is one of the major and oldest department of the institute which started functioning with undergraduate programme in 1956. Since then, the department has registered continuous growth in all directions. Department has at present 10 laboratories with latest experimental facilities. Fully equipped laboratory is under the process of development. The department offers a P.G. Course in "Tribology & Maintenance Engineering", with effect from 1989. Two separate laboratories "Tribology Laboratory" & "Diagnostic Maintenance Laboratory" have also been developed. A subject of Mechatronics has been introduced in the undergraduate studies. The students have presented papers at IIT's & NIT's and won prizes. SAE collegiate club, energized by the Society of Automotive Engineers in functioning in the institute having about 300 members. They organise, Automotive quiz, Pro-E, AutoCAD Workshops, Expert lectures, Paper presentation etc. for engineering students of the state. Students are exposed to practical knowledge by Industrial visits to the industries like Hindustan Motors, Tata Motors Pune, ARAI Pune, Thermal Power Plants, Indra Sagar Hydal Power Plant, etc. Students have been selected in various competitive examinations. About 20 students were selected in CAT, 35 in GATE, 20 in GRE during the year 2002-2004. About 70 students were selected in campus and 3 were selected in Combined Defense Services. The department is forging ahead with assistance under TEQIP and plans to expand facilities in Mechatronics and Material Testing Laboratory. The faculties who have attained superannuation are Dr. S. A. Asif, Dr. O. P. Dubey and Prof. N. K. Jain.

Department of Computer Technology & Applications was established in the year 2001, keeping in mind the increasing demand of computer professional in the computing world. The department offers one PG programme (M.C.A.) with an annual intake of 60 students.

The department is having two well-equipped fully networked laboratories with servers and Pentium nodes. The department also has various audiovisual facilities, which are being used for lectures and student presentations.

The students are encouraged to undertake projects in collaboration with various industries and are also sent for training in industries. It is evident from the Training & Placement records of past year that both faculty & students have been working in synchronization to take the department to heights of academic excellence.

The department supports one under graduate course in Electrical Engineering and two postgraduate courses. Today, the intake of under graduate courses in Electrical Engg. is about 60. With advances in technology the PG has been updated with the Power Electronics & Digital Techniques & Instrumentation like courses.

The intake in PG programme is 50 candidates in both the courses. Each course comprising qualified & technically sounds faculty members who are actually involved in teaching & research works. The faculties in various national & international Journals/Conferences have published more then 200 papers. We have well equipped labs viz, Electrical m/c, Power Electronics & Drives, Power System & High Voltage, Measurement & Instrumentation, Network & Control Engg., Microprocessor & Embedded System which have equipments and also latest sophisticated equipments. It has Software Laboratory, which caters the need of faculty and the students of the department. The department also provides a service to the students of Computer Engg., Electronics & Telecommunication, Electronics & Instrumentation Deptt. In addition department provides services to the Industries & the Public by way of consultancy & Testing. The courses are frequently modified in view of the technological advancement & placement needs for our students. This has resulted in employment of our product through campus interviews. A sizeable fraction from both UG & PG pass outs migrates to other countries for higher studies.

This is the first department established in 1952. The dept. is fully equipped with modern facilities and offers Post Graduate Programme specializing in Structure. Water Resources ,Environmental and Transportation Engineering. The major strength of the dept. is due to its multidimensional activities like testing, consultancy, organising state-of-art seminars, workshops , short term courses etc.. It is the biggest department of the Institute having a faculty strength of 28 staff members with most of the staff members having Ph.D

The dept. is equipped with its own Computer Center for Research and Development, teaching, training and consultancy. The dept. is a QIP Center for Ph.D. Programme. The faculty members of the dept have been awarded various prestigious awards like Anna University Award by ISTE (1992),UNESCO Award (1989), Career Award in 1995,1996and Indira Gandhi Fellowship in 1996.

A large number of publications appear in the National and International Journals and proceedings of Conference every year . The department has also organised one International Conference on cartography. INCA -95 during Dec.1995

Computer Engineering Department was stablished in 1984 to offer an Undergraduate program in computer engineering. In 1986, a Postgraduate Programme in Computer Science came into existence ,which was later diversified to Postgraduate Programme in Computer based Automation. The department has well equipped laboratories to support computing including Networking, robotics, automation, multimedia, graphics, hardware and Neuro-Fuzzy Control. Bio-Medical Department

Today the developments in technologies especially Electronics, Communication, Instrumentation, Computer Engineering and Information Technology have led to improved diagnosis and therapy. Biomedical instruments are being developed which assist the medico person in imparting quick, accurate and reliable diagnosis and therapy.

Biomedical Engineering deals with the application of electronic, pneumatic and mechanical instruments that are used in medical science applications. The bachelors course on Biomedical Engineering in this Institute has started in the year of 2002 with an intake of 60 students. This course covers the Electronics and Instrumentation aspects of medical instruments required for health care. The theory of signal processing applied to medical science such as, image processing, digital signal processing, network analysis, etc. is also a part of academic curriculum in this course. This course also imparts training to the students for overall design, maintenance and installation of medical instruments in a hospital or a medical R&D centre. This course aims to strengthen the manpower in the area of Biomedical Engineering. Thus, this forms a bridge between Engineering and Medical streams for research & development and also the regular practices.

Health monitoring and management of disease in health care system is one of the promising industries that is expected to grow rapidly and gain high profits in the near future.

The dependency on medical instruments has given rise to changes in electrical safety test and measurement of accuracy and calibration of medical instrument itself. A biomedical engineer is equally sharing the responsibility of health care along with doctors and paramedical staff. This demands a well trained and directionally educated Biomedical Engineer.
Unlike other engineering fields the advancement in Biomedical Engineering is more challenging. A biomedical Engineer is useful to the society in following manner:

As an engineer in medical hospital to maintain, train, monitor instruments and if necessary deduce diagnosis (at elementary level).
As a development engineer in preparing up a proto-type instrument.
As a R&D engineer in medical sciences.
As a development engineer to set up an instrumental patient monitoring system.

Information Technology department

The department has two fully networked labs with state-of-the art computing facilities and is in the process of developing two new laboratories viz. Mobile Computing lab and Project Lab with the financial assistance under TEQIP project. The Mobile Computing Lab will house the experimental setups based on latest wireless and mobile equipments to impart the knowledge to students in this area, which is one of the important upcoming areas in the field of Information Technology.

The curriculum of the B.E (IT) is reviewed from time-to-time and is revised regularly, keeping in view the needs of industry. The department also provides training and higher learning opportunities to faculty to improve their teaching methodology. The faculty members are also encouraged to take-up consultancy work and carry out research and development activities.

The department has good collaboration with some of the reputed industries. The experts from the industry are invited as visiting faculty as well as for delivering lectures on specialized topics. Many student projects at final year level are also carried out in association with the industries. An internal website has also been developed in the deptt., containing an e-library in which almost 70 books of various subjects have been downloaded which will help the students to improve their analytical and practical skills. Department also conducts certain specialized training programs and in this connection a certificate course on AutoCAD was conducted twice for Mechanical Engineers, in collaboration with Industrial and Production Engg. department of the Institute.

There is a good interaction among students, faculty and the staff. Events are organized for students for development of their personality and skills. Aiming at the same, an Inter College Quiz Competition, "ACIES'06" was jointly organized by deptt. of IT and IEEE MP Sub-Section, on 20th Feb. 2006 at SGSITS, under the college Annual Function AAYAAM-06. Students actively participated in the various Software contests, Paper presentations, Programming contests etc. organized during the annual function.

The success of IT deptt. can be seen in terms of excellent recruitment of the students of first and second batches passed out in year 2004 and 2005 respectively, apart from their good academic results. Approx. 60% of current final year students have been recruited so far in various reputed companies like Amdocs, HCL, Kanbay, TCS, CSC, Impetus etc. This year, out of seven students of SGSITS recruited by INDUSLOGIC, which offered highest package of Rs 4.25 lacs p.a., three students are from IT deptt. Many students have also secured high ranks in competitive exams like GATE, CAT, Public Sector exams etc. One student of IT III year has secured 7th rank at National level in the GATE-2006 examination.

This department was established in 1984.This department came out as a an offspring of Electronics Engineering due to enormous development in the field of electronics and demand of Instrumentation Engineers in the city and its vicinity. Equipped with modern sophisticated instruments , it offers Under Graduate course (B.E. Programme) and it also contributes towards Post graduate course of Digital Techniques & Instrumentation of Electronics Department and M.Tech (Optoelectronics) of Applied Physics Department . A M. Tech. course Microelectronics & VLSI Design was started by this department in 2002.

The faculty is well qualified to accept the new Challenges in the Electronics and Instrumentation field. The department has been recognized as a center to conduct short term Programme for teaching faculty in the PC based a Electronics Instrumentation under UGC vocational courses .New ventures for research and product development in the area of Biomedical and Optical Engineering are being set up, under MHRD schemes .In 1995 & 1996 student of this department secured top position in GATE examination in the country. In year 2000 and 2004 student has secured first rank and fourth rank respectively in GATE examination in Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering.

The intake in PG programme is 50 candidates in both the courses. Each course comprising qualified & technically sounds faculty members who are actually involved in teaching & research works. The faculties in various national & international Journals/Conferences have published more then 200 papers. We have well equipped labs viz, Electrical m/c, Power Electronics & Drives, Power System & High Voltage, Measurement & Instrumentation, Network & Control Engg., Microprocessor & Embedded System which have equipments and also latest sophisticated equipments. It has Software Laboratory, which caters the need of faculty and the students of the department. The department also provides a service to the students of Computer Engg., Electronics & Telecommunication, Electronics & Instrumentation Deptt. In addition department provides services to the Industries & the Public by way of consultancy & Testing. The courses are frequently modified in view of the technological advancement & placement needs for our students. This has resulted in employment of our product through campus interviews. A sizeable fraction from both UG & PG pass outs migrates to other countries for higher studies.

Mechanical Engineering department

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is one of the major and oldest department of the institute which started functioning with undergraduate programme in 1956. Since then, the department has registered continuous growth in all directions. Department has at present 10 laboratories with latest experimental facilities. Fully equipped laboratory is under the process of development. The department offers a P.G. Course in "Tribology & Maintenance Engineering", with effect from 1989. Two separate laboratories "Tribology Laboratory" & "Diagnostic Maintenance Laboratory" have also been developed. A subject of Mechatronics has been introduced in the undergraduate studies. The students have presented papers at IIT's & NIT's and won prizes. SAE collegiate club, energized by the Society of Automotive Engineers in functioning in the institute having about 300 members. They organise, Automotive quiz, Pro-E, AutoCAD Workshops, Expert lectures, Paper presentation etc. for engineering students of the state. Students are exposed to practical knowledge by Industrial visits to the industries like Hindustan Motors, Tata Motors Pune, ARAI Pune, Thermal Power Plants, Indra Sagar Hydal Power Plant, etc. Students have been selected in various competitive examinations. About 20 students were selected in CAT, 35 in GATE, 20 in GRE during the year 2002-2004. About 70 students were selected in campus and 3 were selected in Combined Defense Services. The department is forging ahead with assistance under TEQIP and plans to expand facilities in Mechatronics and Material Testing Laboratory. The faculties who have attained superannuation are Dr. S. A. Asif, Dr. O. P. Dubey and Prof. N. K. Jain.
