Phek College was the brainchild of the people of Phek under the leadership of then Deputy Commissioner of Phek, Shri Lalhuma, lAS and Shri Vejoi Vero, the then Minister of State, Nagaland respectively. During the annual meeting on 28th July, 1981, which was presided over by the then Deputy Commissioner, Phek Shri Lalhuma, the public, government officials and parents unanimously resolved to establish a College in Phek town, which was christined as 'PHEK COLLEGE'.

Dimapur College was started at the initiative of some prominent citizens of the town to provide an opportunity for higher studies to those who could not afford to go outside Dimapur/ Nagaland. Zunheboto Govt.College was established as a private College on the 21st of July,1980. It was sponsored and managed by the Sumi Hoho. Lt.Kughato Sukhai , the first and the then President of Sumi Hoho played a pioneering role by not only coming up with the idea of setting up a College, but also in establishing it.But initially,there was no proper fund, no infrastructure and no manpower to run a College.
