Located in Pranabananda Women’s College, Dimapur was the first exclusive women’s college in Nagaland, established in the year 1991 under the aegis of Bharat Sevashram Sangha, a reputed Global Philanthropic Organisation, and a host of other reputed senior citizens of Dimapur with Late Manik Bhattacharjee as Chief Organiser and Founder Secretary. Initially, the college was affiliated to the North Eastern Hill University NEHU. However, with the establishment of Nagaland University NU, the college came to be recognised and permanently affiliated to the said University under NU/AC/GEN-1/97-1715 Dated 2nd September, 2004. The college is recognised by the University Grants Commission UGC under section 2 f and 12 b of the UGC Act 1956. Recently, it has also been accredited with Grade ‘B’ by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council NAAC., The college is guided by the philosophy that there is a latent potentiality in each individual, which properly harnessed, makes the individual an asset to the society. This leads to the national objective for creating a strong base for human resource development. Women till now suppressed and discriminated in our society, can act as an active partner for social reconstruction, national rejuvenation and welfare of mankind if given the opportunity to develop their latent potentialities. At the same time, education being the most effective means for empowering women, it is only through education that women can acquire the required knowledge, skills and self-confidence so that they can fully participate in the decision making and developmental process of the nation. This is true not only because education is an entry point to other opportunities, but also because the educational achievements of women can create a ripple effect within the family and across generations. Further, education of women being one of the most effective ways to tackle poverty, investments on women’s education especially in higher education is expected to yield rich dividends., With the above rationale in view, the college strives to empower women by providing quality and holistic education in the Arts & Commerce streams at the college level to women in general and to those who could not continue their post-metric studies due to want of adequate facilities. Today, the college has earned a reputation both from the general public and the Nagaland University NU for its academic excellence and for imbibing morality and discipline to young girls to become women of excellence, responsibility and character.
