The Russian Language course was started in 1969 as a non-credit course for the M.Phil students. A certificate course of Proficiency in Russian Language was started in the same year. The Diploma course was also started in 1970 and the Advance Diploma in Russian Language & Literature was started in 1977. This department happens to be one of the oldest centres for imparting- Russian language skills in India and many students were earlier sent to the ex-USSR for higher studies under the Cultural Exchange program and in recent times to the other centres of Russian language (learning) in India & Russia.
