Assam University came into existence through Assam (Central) University Act, 1989 . It was established in 1994,since then the University is steadily becoming an excellent centre of learning. The campus, situated in Dargakona, about 20 kms from Silchar, is set amid sprawling hillocks, a typical landscape in the North East. The campus in an area of 600 acres surrounded by lakes and mountains provides an ideal environment for academic pursuit. Drawing its 230 plus faculty from many disciplines, from all over the country, the university sustains a multidisciplinary approach to higher education. The University has sixteen Schools on major disciplines. There are 35 Departments under these Sixteen Schools.

Facilities

Computer Centre Assam University Computer Centre is established in March 1997. It is the central hub for ICT related services for Assam University. The National Knowledge Network (NKN) Point of Presence (PoP) is commissioned in the Computer Centre. This acts as an Internet gateway for the campus-wide university network. A separate 10 Mbps connectivity under UGC-Infonet Scheme is also commissioned in the Centre for provisioning the resources that are available under the scheme to the university campus-wide network. Central Instrumentation Laboratory (CIL) The CIL was established in the year 2007 with funding from UGC. The CIL houses sophisticated state of art analytical instruments like Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectometry(GC-MS), Atomic Absorption Spectometry(AAS), High Performance Liquid Chromatography(HPLC),Fourier Transform Infra Red Spectrometer(FT-IR),, Impedance Analyser(LCR Meter) and a new 400MHz FT-NMR with multiprobe facilityhas been installed recently. The main objective of CIL is to provide analytical instrumentation support to all science departments of Assam University, other Institutes, research laboratories, national laboratories and industries in the country. In addition, CIL also provides teaching support to Post Graduate and IPP level of science departments of the University. Central Library (Rabindra Library) Assam University Library was started with the establishment of the University in the year 1994 as a central facility for meeting the information requirements of the academic community of the University. The Central Library of Assam University was shifted to its new permanent Central Library-cum-Computer Centre building in January 2006 and renamed as RABINDRA LIBRARY. The new building has a total plinth area of 38,700 sq.ft. The main function of Library includes collection and development of knowledge resources, technical processing, organization, retrieval and dissemination of information to the end users including the academic community of Barak Valley in particular and the entire North Eastern Region in general. Health Care Centre The University Health Centre, managed by experienced Medical personnel including Lady Medical Officer, supported by para-medical staff. The centre caters to the medical needs of the University community. The University has introduced Medical Insurance to each students. Besides these, health camps are frequently organised in the campus with specialist doctors from Silchar Medical College. University is issuing Health Card to each student for the extending Medical facilities to the students efficiently. In case of emergency, ambulance service is also provided to transfer patients to Silchar Medical College, around 10 km from the campus. However, expenses related to medical emergencies and hospitalization shall be borne by the parents/guardians of the student concerned if not covered by the Insurance. The University initiated the process of revamping health centre by procuring equipments like X-4647 ray machine, auto analysis and setting up of diagnostic laboratory. Hostel Accommodation There are at present nine hostels in the University campus. The hostels are : four for boys and five for girls students having approximately 749 single and shared room accommodation. The Hostels are furnished with basic facilities, Hostel seats are limited and every student may not get the seat in hostel. Availability of seats depend upon the vacancy in the Hostel. A separate Booklet Hostel Boarders & conduct Rules of the Hostel is also available. Transport Facility In addition to state transport bus services, eleven buses are also available for the benefit of the students. There are also three buses for the staff members of the University Communicating between Silchar and University Campus. Gymnasium A well equipped Gymnasium exists for both ladiesc and gents. Interested students , faculty, staff members can enroll their name for availing facilities in the Gymnasium. Games & Sports Since its inception in 1994, games and sports have been one of the important foci of Assam Universitys endeavour to facilitate all-round development of students physical and mental abilities. Every year an Annual Social Meet is organized in the University where along with cultural activities, indoor and outdoor sports are held. The University is currently a member of the Inter-University Sports Board of India and its teams participate in Zonal and All-India University Tournaments bringing laurels and prizes and medals for the University. Students' Welfare The office of the Dean of Students Welfare looks after the welfare of the students with active support of the representatives of the students, faculty and administration. Student Community Centre has been added from the year 2010 for various students activities University Magazine The Assam University Magazine - Prachi Prangan is published annually. The Magazine offers to the University students a medium to give expression to their literary and intellectual endeavours. University Journal Assam University publishes research papers in the Journals in Humanities, Science and Technology in addition to some departmental Journals. Students' Discipline Each student with respect to his/her work in the course (P.G./ U.G./ Integrated course/ M. Phil/Ph.D./Certificate/Diploma) as well as his/her general conduct in the University, shall remain under the control of the respective School and the Department and shall be guided by the disciplinary code of the University. The Proctor looks after the discipline amongst the students NSS Activity Students are encouraged in participating NSS (National Service Scheme) activities organised by the Programme Officer and Coordinator, NSS Unit of Assam University. NSS is sponsored by the Ministry of Human Resource Development(MHRD), Govt. of India. NCC Training The NCC Units in Assam University arrange NCC training for the students of the University-both boys and girls. For enlisting names for NCC training, the contact person will be the Dean, Students'Welfare(DSW) , Assam University. Fellowship Assam University provides AUS-UGC fellowship. Students are also encouraged to avail Meritorius Students Fellowship. ICSSR Fellowship,JRF/SRF,INSPIRE Fellowship,CSIR etc. for general and MNAF for Minoroty M.Phil/Ph.D scholars and Dr. D S Kothari Fellowship for Post Doctoral Scholars and Rajib Gandhi Fellowship for SC/ST scholars Major Scientific Equipments With the one time assistance from the UGC and the funds available from other agencies like DST, DAE and CSIR the various Science Departments have procured the sate of the art instruments.

Centres in Assam University

Health Centre The University Health Centre, managed by experienced Medical personnel including Lady Medical Officer, supported by para-medical staff. Centre for Studies in Endangered Languages, Manusciptology and Folkloristics(CELMF) The Centre for Studies in Endangered Languages, Manuscriptology and Folkloristics(CELMF) started its functioning on official basis since 01-01-2009 under UGC approval. The centre is attached to the Department of Bengali and is monitored by a committee having Prof. S. Devi as Chairman, Dr. Biswotosh Choudhury as Vice Chairman and Prof. D. Bhattacharjee as the director cum convener. Presently , there are threefaculty members. Centre for Soft Matters The Centre for Soft Matters, established under the aegis of the Department of Chemistry in 2009 under UGC 11th Plan to address the academic and research pertaining to the design, synthesis, characterisation, physical properties and device application of soft materials. The purpose of the centre is to provide a centralized interdisciplinary platform for study and research related to advanced areas in material science. Bioinformatics Centre Bioinformatics Centre of Assam University, Silchar came into existence in the year 2008 with full financial assistance from Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India under DBT-BIF scheme. Since its birth, the centre is actively engaged in teaching and research in the different fields of Bioinformatics. Realizing the need of incorporation of Bioinformatics tools in Life Sciences research, the Department of Life Science, Assam University took special initiative to establish this centre. In January 2009, the Bioinformatics Laboratory was inaugurated by the then Vice Chancellor Prof. Tapodhir Bhattacharjee. Centre for Biodiversity and Natural Resources Conservation Biological diversity is fundamental to the fulfilment of human needs. An environment which is rich in biological diversity, offers the broadcast array of options for sustaining welfare and for adapting to change. The Barak Valley falling in Assam in the Northeast India belongs to the Indo-Burma Hotspots, and one of the most biological diverse regions of the world. Barak valley constitutes 8.9% geographical area of the state covering an area of 6922 sq km. The land use/land cover area of the Valley may be characterised by evergreen forest, semi evergreen forest, mixed moist deciduous forest, scrub forest, degraded forest, agricultural land and tea gardens. Barak Valley has 14 Reserve Forests and one wildlife sanctuary.
