The Department of Economics established in the year 1970, is one of the oldest departments in this University. Over the period it has recorded an excellent growth in terms of academics as well as in terms catering to the needs of the students who pursue their career in the subject of economics. Apart from offering Master’s and Research degrees (M.Phil. and Ph.D.) in Economics, the Department in the year 2000 forayed into offering a new course. It started offering a four-semester, self-financed Master’s Degree in Business Economics (MBE). The course since then has been well received by the premier banking and non-banking financial institutions, the proof of which lies in the fast growing number of applicants seeking admission to the course.
The department is also involved in conducting capacity building workshops and seminars for the students who have sought admissions into various courses. These types of workshops and seminars have become a regular feature not only for the students but also for the teachers of economics in South Gujarat and elsewhere in Gujarat.
The present and past faculties of the department have been and are continuously engaged in research and other academic activities.
