Department of Chemistry

The postgraduate Department of Chemistry was established in 1970 but effectively functioned after it moved to the University campus in 1977 with six teachers and 30 M.Sc. students in organic chemistry specialization. Since then there had been a progressive increase in the faculty/students and different specializations offered. The department of chemistry moved to the present premises in 1994.
As of now the department has 2 years M.Sc. Programmes in (i) Inorganic, (ii) Organic, (iii) Physical, (iv) Analytical Chemistry with total intake of 80 students in M.Sc. part I. Self-finance M.Sc. courses in Industrial Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Chemistry also run in two new buildings with a capacity of 20 students at M.Sc. I level in each course. In addition, a self-finance M.Sc. evening course for persons doing jobs with an intake of 30 students is also offered.
The department is actively engaged in research leading to M.Phil and Ph.D. degrees. The research is done in the areas like synthetic organic chemistry (dyes, drugs, polymers), surface and colloids chemistry, liquid crystals, separation science, coordination chemistry etc. The strength of the department’s research effort is illustrated in the many papers published in reputed journals each year by faculty and students.
The department believes that good graduate education requires regular interaction with prominent chemists from other institutions and industries. The faculty members frequently visit Universities/Industries in India and abroad. The department has so far produced 305 Ph.Ds and 189 M.Phils and published large number of papers in reputed journals. The Department has also organized few symposia/refresher courses.
Our department currently has 7 faculty (5 Professors, 1 Associate Professor and 1 Assistant Professor), 11 non-teaching staff, over 250 Master’s students and more than 40 research students.
Department of Chemistry is taking best efforts in making chemistry learning a new experience and more effective. Research collaborations with foreign universities are also a feature of the department.
