Department of Neurology

Neurology is unique among medical specialties in its intersection with psychiatry. Neurology deals with nervous system function and disorders. The Department of Neurology at SVIMS was started in February, 1993. The department made significant strides forward since then in rendering neurological services to patients in Rayalaseema area and evolved into a full fledged neurological centre equipped with latest diagnostic facilities in Andhra Pradesh. It is one of the best neurological centre at SVIMS in Andhra Pradesh.

=> "Clinical Electrophysiological study in periodic paralysis"
=> "Management patterns of epilepsy in India - Multi centre study" in collaboration with Department of Neurology, SCTIMST,Trivandrum.

Ongoing :
=> Research Collaboration with Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysore: "Study of Trace Elements in Neuro-degenerative disorders in serum and CSF" - collaborative study by Dr.K.S.Jagannatha Rao, Senior Scientist, Dept. of Biochem istry and Nutrition, CFTRI, Mysore and Dr.B.Vengamma, Dept. of Neurology, SVIMS, Tirupati.

=> Research Collaboration with Jawaharlal Nehru for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore on "National Collaborative study on Genetics of juvenile myoclonic epilepsy".

=> Single photon emission computer tomography studies on stroke patients is under progress since October, 1998 in collaboration with Nuclear Medicine department.

=> Telefactor Beehive EEG System (with facilities for long term epilepsy monitoring and digital EEG)
=> 8 channel advanced ENMG/EP machine (Neuropack)

Future Plans :

=> Establishment of "Comprehensive Epilepsy Care Unit" and "Epilepsy Surgery Centre" for patients with intractable epilepsy.
=> Establishment Acute Stroke Care Centre.
=> Establishment of "Human Brain Banking" in Southern Andhra Pradesh.
=> Establishment of Department of Neuro Rehabilitation in collaboration with Balaji Institute of Surgery Research and Rehabilitation for the Disabled (BIRRD), T.T.D., Tirupati.
=> Establishment of Experimental Neuro degeneration in the CNS.
=> Establishment of molecular genetics and neurogenetics division to study the genetic aspects of the epilepsy
