Department of Microbiology

 

The Department of Microbiology has started functioning in 1993 with the following sections:

=> BACTERIOLOGY
=> MYCOBACTERIOLOGY
=> SEROLOGY & IMMUNOLOGY
=> MYCOLOGY
=> PARASITOLOGY
=> VIROLOGY

Equipments :

=> All essential equipment available for routine Diagnostic & Research work.
=> Digital Microscope, Invertoscope & Turbidity Meter

Research Activities :

=> Surveillance for MRSA (Methicillin resistance in Staphylococcus aureus).
=> Vancomycin resistance in Staphyloccus Species.
=> Rapid diagnosis of septicaemia & Laboratory monitoring of Antibiotic treatment using modern automated blood culture equipment
=> HSCRP levels among asymptomatic individuals, as a marker for future atta
=> HSCRP levels as prognostic marker for CAD & CVD patients.
=> Procalcitonins estimation as a sepsis marker.
=> Leptospirosis-prevalence among ARF patients.
=> Prevalance of antibiotic efflux pump mechanism among multi drug resistant bacterial isolates.
=> Incidence of Legionella infection in Hospital & Community setting & role of Environmental Water as source of infection.
=> Study of Non-fermenting Gram negative bacilli in HAI cases.
=> Biofilm forming pathogens
=> MDR Tuberculosis

Future Plans :

=> To Start Identification and Sensitivity testing of Mycobacteria including NOW TB myobacteria
=> To Better the antibiotic resistance monitoring and to have a standardized sensitivity determination.
=> To Increase the panel of Serological test like Chlamydia serology, Full panel of Hepatitis Screening (HAV,HBV,HCV,HDV & HEV), Antigen deduction for HIV.
=> To Setup Virology Laboratory and Institute of Human Virology with treatment facilities for AIDS patients
=> To Upgrade Mycology & Parasitology sections
=> To Introduce PCR Based Identification of important agents like Tuberculosis, HIV Infections & Hepatitis B&C.
=> To Install fluorescent activated cell shorted for CD4 & CD8 counts in HIV
=> To start HLA Testing for starting Transplantation.
=> To Establish a referral centre for laboratory diagnosis of infectious diseases
=> To study the trends of drug resistance among bacterial pathogens and also antiviral resistance pattern of local HIV infected people.
