Department of Neuropathology

The Department of of Neuropathology was started by Dr S Sriramachari in 1959, along with departments of Neurosurgery and Neurology. In 1974 Dr DH Deshpande joined as Professor and later in 1982 Prof Sarala Das took over as Head of the Department. Subsequently, Prof SK Shankar headed the department from 1998 to 2010.

Courses offered

=> Doctor of Medicine (DM in Neuropathology)
=> Doctor of Philosophy (PhD in neuropathology)

Objectives

=> Provide high quality tertiary-level diagnostic services (Neuropathology, Electron Microscopy) for the patients of NIMHANS and other health care centers in South India
=> Develop sufficient manpower in the field of diagnostic Neuropathology to meet the requirement of all centers in the country with departments of Clinical Neuroscience by providing Neuropathology training to students/faculty of pathology &clinical neurology/ neurosurgery.
=> Develop innovative teaching methods and use information technology to develop teaching modules for dissemination of knowledge and thereby enhance manpower.
=> Initiate and develop telepathology to connect remote hospitals in the country. Develop networking amongst neuropathologists in the country that will provide a common platform for interaction and develop uniformity of reporting.
=> Provide safe blood/blood components and therapeutic services (plasmapheresis) to patients round the clock
=> Train and develop sufficient manpower in transfusion medicine technology, to meet the requirement of all the centers in the state of Karnataka by enhance training methods and achieve excellence in training in transfusion medicine technology for the state of Karnataka.
=> Promote active inter disciplinary research collaborations within the Institute and between Institutions to promote neuroscience research. Enhance quality of research in the broad field of neuropathology to keep abreast with the recent advances in the discipline and foster research temperament amongst medical and non medical students.
=> Provide support and co-operation for Government initiatives including NACO, National Blood Transfusion Council (NBTC) and National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) in achieving its objectives.

Research

Scientific research is a key focus of the department, with special emphasis on neuroocology, neuroinfections, neuromuscular disorders and neurodegeneration and developing new diagnostic modalities in keeping with advances in emerging technology. Several of the faculty are involved in projects with interdepartmental and inter Institutional collaborations. The faculty of the department have been mentoring and guidingdissertation works of DM Neurology, McH Neurosurgery, DM Neuroradiology, MPhil Neuroscience and PhD Clinical Neuroscience students in their fields of expertise. The research work by our faculty has received recognition both nationally and internationally and resulted in more than300publications in National and International peer reviewed journals in the last decade.
