The Govt. of Kerala sanctioned the new department of Veterinary Public Health in the College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences in July 1969. The subject of meat hygiene was delinked from the Department of Pathology and Meat Hygiene in 1972. Dr.R.Padmanabha Iyer was the first Professor and Head of the Department. Masters degree programme (M.V.Sc) in Veterinary Public Health was started in the year 1976 and Ph.D programme in 2007. The Meat Plant was established by the department and the slaughter and sale of meat was managed by the department of Veterinary Public Health till the formation of Department of Livestock Products Technology

The Department of Veterinary Public Health has got three laboratories

Quality control lab
Zoonoses lab
Molecular biology lab.
The Department is equipped with Electronic Balance, thermal cycler, Gel-doc System, Monocular, binocular medical microscope, pH meter, Spectroquant photometer Nova60, ELISA reader etc.
Facilities for practical and research work for all the UG and PG students are made available through these laboratories.

A departmental library is maintained for easy and quick reference. The department is provided with two computers having hi-speed broad band internet facility. The routine water quality testing contributes to the revenue generation of the college.

Well equipped laboratory to carry out molecular as well as microbiological studies.
Microbiological quality assessment of meat, milk, feed, and other food products.
Evaluation of Physical, microbiological and chemical quality of water.
Evaluation of microbiological quality of air
Isolation and identification of pathogens of public health importance from various food products.
Rapid diagnostic tests for detection of various zoonotic agents by modern diagnostic methods (PCR, ELISA)
