Mission
The mission of the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine is to promote health, productivity, and welfare of food- producing animals, companion animals and wildlife populations; ensure safety of foods of animal origin; and prevent animal disease with its associated risks to human health. We aim to improve the prevention and treatment of diseases of animals by defining and applying best clinical practice, by understanding and developing the science underpinning best practice, and by embedding an education programme in the veterinary sciences that delivers the best veterinary practitioners, academics and research scientists.
History of the Department
The Department of Medicine and Therapeutics was one of the five departments sanctioned during the inception of the college in 1955. In 1959, these were reorganized and the Department of Medicine and Parasitology was established. Subsequently when Kerala Agricultural University was formed in 1972, the same set up continued till 1976, when the department was bifurcated to form Preventive Medicine. The name of the department was changed as the Department of Veterinary Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine during 1994 when the Veterinary Council of India (VCI) syllabus was introduced for under graduate programme. The department started offering Masters degree programme (M.V.Sc) in 1976 and doctorate programme in 2008.
