During the formative years of the Kerala Veterinary College and Research Institute in 1955-1958, there was a composite department of Parasitology, Pathology and Bacteriology. The Dept. of Medicine and Parasitology came into existence in 1959 with Dr. C.T.Peter as the Professor and Head. The department of Parasitology started functioning from 1974 onwards as an independent department with Dr. R. Kalyanasundaram as the Professor and Head. Post graduate programme leading to the award of MSc( Changed to MVSc in 1974) and Ph.D were initiated in 1964 and PG diploma programmes in 1965.
