The Department of Engineering was started at Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad, since the inception of the School in the year 1926. The role of the department was to train the students of Mining Engineering and later Peroleum Engg. in the core subjects of engineering as a service department till the year 1973; while early this year the department had imparted 13 weeks extensive training in the area of coal mining machineries to the graduate trainees in Mechanical and Electrical cadre of Bharat Coking Coal Limited, Dhanbad.

In recognition of the expanding activities of the department, the school renamed the department as Department of Engg. & Mining Machinery in the year 1973. In pursuance of the human resource development activity in the field of Mining Machinery, the department launched the M.Tech programme in Mining Machinery in 1975 and Drilling Engg. in 1978. The B.Tech programme in Mining Machinery Engg. was started in the year 1977. It is the first and only one of its kind in the country. This programme covers mechanical and electrical engineering aspects of various mining/ construction machineries deployed at the underground and opencast mines in coal and non-coal sectors. Further, the department was allowed to run a postgraduate programme in Maintenance Engg. & Tribology starting in the year 1988. With the availability of basic infrastructure and expertise, the Institute recognized and felt the necessity to start the B.Tech (Mechanical Engg.) course in the year 1999. Subsequently the name of the department was changed to the Department of Mechanical Engg. & Mining Machinery Engg. in the year of 2002. Since the year 2003 this department started offering two B.Tech degrees: one in Mechanical Engg. and the other in Mining Machinery Engg in its convocation in 2004. All students of the department of undergraduate and post graduate courses are well accepted in reputed public and private sector companies. Since 2004, above 20% of Mechanical Engg. degree holders are pursuing or completed their graduate studies in reputed universities/Institutes in American, European and Australian universities.

Many of the pass outs of this department are also selected for courses in different IIMs, IISc, IITs. Many of the Mining Machinery Engg. degree holders have also found very suitable study offers from various universities of repute in abroad and IIMs. The department has equipped many of its laboratories with modern state of the art equipment and softwares along with potential research manpower to enhance the academic and research activities of the department. It is also rendering its services for doctoral research in various areas of Mechanical Engg., Mining Machinery Engg. Moreover, the department is active in imparting training to the practicing engineers through refresher courses and a large number of such programme have already been organized for the executives of various industries.
