ndian School of Mines University is a housing, co-educated university that is based in the rich mineral belt of India in the city of Dhanbad. The school was established in 1929 under the umbrella Royal school of mines, London. Nowadays the school offers various disciplinary courses serving a wide range of engineering and scientific disciplines. It is rated among as the best engineering establishment in the country.
Indian school of mines is the only institute of its kind in India and has for a long time catered hugely to mining, mining equipment, minerals, petroleum and mechanical production. It has produced one of the most experienced engineers in India. India school of mines University has rapidly developed and improved amongst other engineering colleges in India. It has constantly being rated amongst the top academic institutions in India. In June 2007, the school was ranked second after IIT-JEE league institutions. Indian school of Mines University has five departments within it. These are Petroleum Engineering, mining engineering, Applied Geophysics, Applied Geology and Electrical Engineering.
The school also has a lecture hall complex, inaugurated in 2006, which acts as an open-air theatre. In addition, the school has a geological museum. There is also an auditorium, Penmann Auditorium, which is just next to the main building, which is used to hold meetings and events. The jubilee Lecture Theatre is now used for workshops, seminars and presentations. The school has nine hostels, four for women and five for gents. Currently two more hostels are being constructed, amber and Jasper. More to that the school has 2 hostels mainly for research purposes. The schools library is very big and automated. It provides services to students on a daily basis even Saturdays and Sundays. The library has a rich collection of books, which are more than 80,000. The library material is available online on web-based software known as LIBSYS.
The computer department creates a link between all the departments I the campus. Internet and e-mail services are available to users through International Internet Gateway. The school boasts the presence of a health center that provided medical services and care to students and staff and their members and the community living in the surrounding areas. The school has not been left behind in recreational facilities as it has very nice spots for taking a walk through, going outs and picnics. The most striking spots are the Parasnath Hill, Maithon Dam and waterfalls, which are just one, or two hours walk from the school.
