INTRODUCTION
The Department of Library & Information Science was started as evening course in the year 1966.
MISSION AND VISION STATEMENT
Libraries are the backbone of any developed society. It is said that "the nation who reads, the nation that leads". This statement is true for the development of any society. So in this regard the department tries to make the society educated formally and informally through the classroom method by training young professionals and also help in the continuing education as well as adult education programme.
OBJECTIVES
The main objectives of the course are:
To acquaint students with the principles of modern management of Library and Information centres.
To make them aware about the growth and development of universe of knowledge and its organization in different fields.
To provide training in methods and techniques of research and their application to the problems in Library and Information Science and preparing one for further research.
To acquaint students with the theory and practices of Information Technology in information collection, processing, storage and retrieval.
To acquaint on the principles, methods and techniques of organization and management of modern Library and Information centres.
HISTORY
The department was started as evening course in the year 1966 with University Librarian Dr Jogeswar Sarma as Head of the Department leading to Bachelor of Library Science (B.Lib Sc.) degree and in the year 1979 Master of Library Science (M.Lib.Sc.) course was introduced. In 1983, both B.Lib.Sc. and M.Lib.Sc. courses become one year full time day courses, and in the year 1985 the course is restructured as Bachelor of Library and Information Science (B.L.I.Sc.) & Master of Library and Information Science (M.L.I.Sc.) course with some changes in the syllabus. Since 1987 the Ph.D. programme is also introduced. From the academic session 2001-02, as per UGC guide lines two years integrated M.L.I.Sc. course with four semester has been introduced. Keeping in mind about the changing trend of the society the courses are again revised from this academic session 2007-08. This time more importance has been given to the use of IT in libraries.
