DEPARTMENTAL PROFILE
The Department of Biotechnology was established in the year 1993 by converting earlier Department of Applied Botany and Biotechnology. Since then the Department is producing manpower in the area of Biotechnology and conducting research in different frontier areas of the subject.

1st semester (2007-2009 batch) : 12 students

To develop motivated professionals for facing global challenges in the field of Biotechnology and to create awareness among the society to harness the benefits of modern Biotechnological innovations.

HISTORY
The Department of Biotechnology, Gauhati University was established in the year 1993. Since then the Department is producing manpower in the area of Biotechnology and conducting research in different frontier areas of the subject. The faculty members are also actively involved in development of entrepreneurship in some of the potential areas of Biotechnology in the NE region. Over last one-decade, several major research projects submitted by the faculty members have been approved and funded by DBT, DST, GBPIHED, MoEF. UGC, ICMR, ASTEC,(Assam), NMPB, Govt of Assam (SAP) and others. Major funds for infrastructure development of the Department were secured from DBT, DST (FIST Program) and Govt of Assam.
FACILITIES & ASSETS
Laboratory
Molecular biology Lab, Microbiology lab, and Biochemistry lab.
Computer Laboratory
A fully equipped Computer lab with Internet facility has been established with fund from DST, Govt of India under FIST program.
Library
Department has a well-defined Library facility containing books on different areas of Biotechnology and Journal.
