Department of History INTRODUCTION The Department of History, Gauhati University, came into existence in 1948, to impart quality education and to encourage historical research. Emphasis is also on imparting a disciplined value-based education. Its long-term mission is to make the Department a Centre of Excellence. OBJECTIVES The basic objectives of the Department is to: impart quality and value-based education to the students, encourage historical research. The long- term mission is to make the Department a Centre of Excellence in respect of North-Eastern regional research with specific focus on Assam. With that aim in view, students are encouraged to take up research projects on different aspects of North-East Indian history. Although the focus is on regional studies, we do not encourage regional studies in isolation. Our course is designed in such a manner so as to provide an in-depth study of the history of our country in a global setting. Through discussions and seminars we try to expose our students to new ideas and make them aware of new trends in history- writing, cater to the all-round development of the students by encouraging them to actively participate in co-curricular activities, so as to make them competent and become responsible citizens of the country. HISTORY The Department of History, Gauhati University, was started in 1948 at the Cotton College Campus with around thirty students during the session 1949-50. A decade later, in 1959, the Department was shifted, along with other departments, to the newly constructed building of the University Campus at Jalukbari. The strength of both the students and teachers gradually increased within the next few years. In 1962 there were around 100 students and 5 teachers; in 1970-71, 129 students and 7 teachers; and in 1988, 200 students and 8 teachers. The present strength of the students is 120 while the teaching faculty consists of ten members... more.... FACILITIES & ASSETS The Department has a library of around 2000 books and journals. Other facilities and assets include a computer, photostat machine, a manual typewriter and an overhead projector. The department would very soon be provided with more computers and an LCD projector. Library The Department has a small seminar library. STUDENTS & ALUMNI The Department has a total of 120 students, comprising of both boys and girls. The Department admits 60 new students every year on the basis of merit and reservations as per the rules of the UGC and Government of India. The Department is proud of the contribution of its alumni, most of whom today occupy responsible positions in public life. The Department has produced students that have contributed greatly to historical research, rendered public service and made valuable contributions in the academic field.
