The Department of Folklore Research was established in 1972.

VISION AND MISSION STATEMENT

Folklore Research Department relates its course to North-east India where cultural instability and decay of traditional knowledge is rampant any student interested in learning folk arts and knowledge can join this course This course will create activism and knowledge for the cause of cultural rights of the weaker groups and empower the communities by spreading awareness.

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the department are to offer post-graduate training and carry out research on international folklore theory and Indian folklore with special emphasis on the North-east India.

HISTORY

The Folklore Research Department was established with a view to study oral literature, customs, art forms and performing arts of the communities of North-east India especially Assam.The department had its inception in a scheme for a Folklore Archive intiated by Professor Birinchi Kumar Barua in 1955. It was renamed as The Department of Tribal Culture and Folklore Research.It was kept attached to the Anthropology Department but its affairs were handled by Professor Barua till his death in 1964.After his demise Professor Praphulladatta Goswami took charge of the department. In 1972 it became an independent department and was again renamed as the Department of Folklore Research. After professor Goswami Professor Birendranath Datta took charge in 1981 and consolidated the activates of the Department. He was succeeded by Professor Nabin Chandra Sarma in 1995.Dr Kishore Bhattachajee took charge of the Department in 1998 and is in charge till date.Department has received very distinguished national and international visitors including Professor R.M.Dorson.
