The Department of Comparative Philology, Oriental Research Institute, University of Madras first began its research in Tamil in 1914. To perpetuate the memory of Rev. Father John Lazarus, his daughter instituted the endowment Chair in Tamil in his name in 1927 and a separate Tamil Department was established in the Institute. In 1930, the provision was made for one Reader, one Senior Lecturer and one Junior Lecturer. The Readership was converted into Professorship in 1948.
