The Department of Statistics, was formed initially on creating, a post of Lecturer in 1941. The Department was offering supportive programs in Statistics for other Departments and a Diploma courses in Statistics in the early years. The Department also had a research program with 2 scholars being awarded Ph.D. in Statistics. However, the Department was involved in PG teaching since 1958, teaching statistics to M.Sc. Statistics and Inter collegiate University co-operation scheme. The Department of Statistics has evolved into a full-fledged department in teaching and research in Statistics under the able guidance of Prof.K.N.Venkataraman in 1975.
