The Department of Environmental Sciences was established in 1995 under the umbrella of University of Kerala. It is located at Kariavattom campus of Kerala University, about 15 km North of Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station along NH 47. It is a teaching-cum-research department .The department offers M. Sc. (No. of seats = 10), M. Phil. (= 10) and Ph. D. in Environmental Science, and Post-doctoral programmes. Courses in M.Sc. (2 year programme) and M.Phil. (one year programme) in Environmental Science were started in 1999 and 1997 respectively. M.Sc. is of credit and semester pattern.
