Department of Biochemistry

Established in the year 1970, the Department of Biochemistry of the University of Kerala has a distinguished tradition of teaching and research on various aspects of Biochemistry. The major areas of research include biochemical basis of diseases such as atherosclerosis, diabetes, cataract, cancer and filariasis, environmental biochemistry, Nutrition cellular Biochemistry and nanobiology. The Department has successfully undertaken a number of externally funded research programmes sponsored by both national and international agencies, independently and in collaboration with various laboratories in India and abroad. During the last three decades more than 175 students have taken Ph.D from the department and over 700 papers have been published in various international and national journals in Biochemistry. This department in the university has always been in the forefront in organizing a number of academic activities. For the past several years the department has been offering a series of extension, consultancy and service activities particularly in disease diagnosis. The department is getting special financial support for research and teaching from the UGC, New Delhi under the SAP programme, from DST, Govt. of India under the FIST programme, Kerala State Council for Science, technology and environment under SARD programme and DBT project for Nanobiotechnology.
