Music is an integral part of socio-religious life of India. There is a great repertoire of music from the time of birth, through the different stages Mof joy and sorrow, till death. Guru Nanak, the first guru of Sikhs, has described music as a means of attaining spiritual joy and transcendental bliss. By means of music,he moulded the spiritual and temporal life of the devotees.
Besides Guru Nanak, other saints of the Bhakti movement had also composed songs in various ragas which were sung to the accompaniment of musical instruments in the form of kirtan. There are two main genre of music: Vocal and Instrumental. The ancient writers laid emphasis on the cultivation of voice which is the result of great discipline. Control over the voice is the key to the art of singing.
