Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur is one of the thirty National Institutes of Technology in the country. The Govt. of India conferred on the Institute, the Deemed to be University status (under University Grants Commission Act, 1956 (3 of 1956)) with effect from 26th June 2002. Subsequently, the Central Govt. by Act of Parliament (National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007 (29 of 2007)) declared VNIT Nagpur as an Institute of National Importance along with all other NITs. The Act was brought into force from 15th August 2007. Earlier, the Institute was known as Visvesvaraya Regional College of Engineering (VRCE). It was established in the year 1960 under the scheme sponsored by Govt. of India and Govt. of Maharashtra. The college was started in June 1960 by amalgamating the State Govt. Engineering College functioning at Nagpur since July 1956. In the meeting held in October 1962, the Governing Board of the College resolved to name it after the eminent engineer, planner, and statesman of the country Sir M.Visvesvaraya.

The mission of VNIT is to achieve high standards of excellence in generating and propagating knowledge in engineering and allied disciplines. V.N.I.T. is committed to providing an education that combines rigorous academics with joy of discovery. About VNIT
Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur is one of the first six Regional Engineering Colleges established under the scheme sponsored by Government of India. The college was established in June 1960 as a part of national integration initiative through joint venture of Govt. of India and Govt. of Maharashtra and named after the eminent engineer, planner and statesman of the country Sir M. Visvesvaraya.

Situated in an industrially well developed, socially progressive and commercially prosperous state in the country, VNIT is uniquely placed to contribute significantly to the quality of technical manpower to maintain and enhance the technological pre-eminence of the state by;

Over these years, the institute has earned a reputation as a pace setting institute offering high quality academic ambience for engineering education. According to a recent survey, this Institute is now amongst the top 15 institutes in the country producing human resource capable of coping with the accelerating pace of technological developments at international level.

Apart from imparting professional education at under graduate and postgraduate levels, the institute has been extending available expertise to various Govt. / Semi- Govt. and primary objective of institute is to provide advanced technological skills & expertise to enhance teaching & academic activities. Greater emphasis is also being placed on revenue generation through utilisation of facilities for providing services to the industries on commercial basis. VNIT has a beautiful green campus of about 214 acres near Ambazari Dam. All departments & laboratories are housed on the campus. Hostels accommodating about 1000 students, including 200 girl students, as well as residential accommodation for teaching & non-teaching staff of the college are available on the campus. Consciously developed, the campus has retained & increased its green cover, rich in natural flora & fauna, & provides an attraction for bird watchers.

Odd semester runs between July to Nov and Even semester between Dec to April. Evaluation is credit based grade point system on a ten point scale. Students are awarded grades and not marks for their performance in courses registered. Division / percentage of marks are not awarded in grading system. Institute observes practice of continuous evaluation for all courses. Only lecture (L) type of courses have end semester examination in addition to continuous evaluation. Evaluation of lecture type of courses is based on the performance in continuous evaluation and end semester examination taken together. In case of failure, re-examination within two weeks is permitted for end semester component only. There is no re-examination for other type of courses. Students who fails (i.e. awarded FF grade) are required to repeat the course.

Admission procedure to M Tech program

Admission to M Tech programs are done through GATE qualified candidates. Candidates (GATE qualified) selected under stipendiary seats quota are given GATE scholarship as per norms. Reservation of Seats is as per Govt. of India rules. In addition to above, up to 5 seats in each program (except Environmental Engg) are available for Sponsored candidates. For admission under Sponsored seats quota, the candidate must have post-degree two years full time experience in relevant field in which admission is being sought and sponsorship certificate from the organization in which he /she is working. Details of admission procedure and other are given in information brochure separately notified every year during the month of June.

5. Student will be bound by institute rules in force and amendments if any in the future in regard to academic rules and fees.

6. Vehicles are not permitted on campus.

7. Maintaining the discipline and code of conduct is essential on campus. Failure in compliance will result in disciplinary action against the student. Institute’s decision shall be final and binding upon the student.

8. Candidates admitted through DASA/MEA/ICCR scheme of Govt. of India will be required to pay tuition fees component in fees equivalent of USD as prescribed. All other fees are at par with AIEEE admitted students. Policy premium for B Tech will be Rs 3159/- and B Arch will be Rs 3842/-.

a) Personal Accident for Capital Sum Insured of Student : Rs. 100000/-

b) Sum Insured for Hospitalization in India only : Rs 50000/- (per Annum)
