The department was established in the year 1993 to cater the need of B.Sc, Graduates to do post graduation in Chemistry. The faculty members were recruited in the year 1998 and till then the department was looked after by the Ind. Chemistry Department. Since then department is actively involved in teaching, research and extension programmes. Thrust area of research include, bio-organic chemistry, synthetic organic chemistry, natural product chemistry, metal finishing and dyes & pigments. Specialization in Organic Chemistry is introduced at the final M.Sc, since 2006. Specialization of Organic Chemistry will be offered for 10 students at the 2nd year of M.Sc, course.
One major research project funded by UGC, entitled" Enumeration and Investigation of Antifertility activity of Medicinal plants of Shimoga and Sringeri Taluks" has been successfully completed. And one International Collaborative Research Project (ICRP) sponsored by stiefel laboratories, UK, entitled" Evaluation of Indigenous to Shimoga ,Gulbarga and Sandur Areas of the State of Karnataka in India for Activity against skin Diseases" is in good progress since October 2000. Under this research programme, research students from this university visit university of Sunder- land UK for a period of six months every year. In addition the department has British Council Exchange Programme, in which researchers from the university visit UK. Very recently Dr. T.V. Venkatesha has got a major research project entitled Development of new pollution free addition agents for industrial zinc plating by electrochemical study and Dr. Y. Arthoba Naik has got major research project entitled solar energy based electrochemical recovery of heavy metals from industrial effluents-an eco friendly process by UGC Govt of India.
The department has produced more than 30 Ph.D and 3 M.Phils. The research work carried out so for in the department has been published in 100 research papers of National and International repute.
The department with collaboration of the department of Industrial Chemistry has been selected for FIST programme by DST, New Delhi. Under this programme Rs.22 lakhs has been sanctioned and very useful instruments like, IR, UV Spectro Photometer, electronic balances, viscometer and computers have been procured and placed in" Central Instrumentation Room" . The department has received one HPLC Instrument worth Rs. 12 lakhs as donationation by stefel laboratories UK.

The department has organized 12 national level Seminars/Conferences and conducted 6 UGC sponsored refresher courses. So for 15 students have successfully completed UGC/CSIR/NET/GATE examination. During the month of April/may 2007 several students have secured placement in various Industries and Research Institutes through campus interview with handsome salary as other fringe benefits.Various organizations like Syngene Biocon Company, Bangalore, Hickel, Bangalore, BASF, Mangalore, Apotech Bangalore, Strides Arco lab, Mangalore and Vetcare, Bangalore, were visited the campus for the selection of the candidates. It is needles to say that all most all students will get good jobs immediately after their degree.
