Department of Economics
The Department of Economics was started in the academic year 1974-75 by the University of Mysore at B.R.Project. The University of Mysore, on the basis of the recommendations of the Expert Committee appointed by the University Grants Commission for the development of Post Graduate Center at Shimoga, had established Post Graduate Center at B.R.Project in the academic year 1973-74. Thus ,the Department of Economic was a part the erstwhile Post Graduate Center of the University Mysore. The Department was nurtured and developed by the University of Mysore till the formation of Kuvempu University in June 1987. With the establishment of Kuvempu University in 1987, the Department of Economics became one of the oldest PG Departments functioning under Kuvempu University.
The Department offers 2 years Masters Degree Course in Economics under Semester Scheme with Choice Based Credit System.(CBCS)The intake of Students for the Ist Semester has been fixed at 39 Under Merit Category and 23 Under Payment Cum Merit Category, totaling to 62. In order to enable the students to compete effectively in the job market, greater importance is being given for skill formation during their training in the Department. The students are helped in every possible way to improve their communication, analytical and writing skills. Besides covering the topics mentioned in the syllabus, the Faculty makes every attempt to kindle students' interest in current issues. In the course of its existence for over 30 years, the department has imparted quality education to several Post Graduate students, some of whom are now well placed in the State Government, Colleges, Research Institutes and University Departments in other parts of the country.
