Department of English

Started in 1967, it has a strong footing laid by scholars from the parent department of OU. M.A., M.Phil. courses and Ph.D. programme in English are offered by the department. The specializations of the faculty include Indian Writing in English, English Language Teaching, British Literature, Translation Studies, Women Studies, Literary Criticism, Comparative Literature and American Literature. The faculty have guided 81 Ph.D. candidates and 152 M.Phil. candidates for their respective degrees. The Department has been bringing out a scholarly annual research journal, Kakatiya Journal of English Studies (KJES) since 1978. Some of the special issues include: Rabindranath Tagore, Mulk Raj Anand, Modern Indian Aesthetic Thought, Indian English Novel, Indian Literature in Translation and Films and Mahasweta Devi. Articles published in KJES by the faculty too have won acclaim in the academic world, having been cited in international editions.

Research Work

The faculty members are actively involved in serious research and all of them have research degrees of M. Phil. and Ph. D. The teachers have been guiding the students for M. Phil and Ph. D degrees in contemporary literature on thrust areas like Post-Colonial Literatures, Indian Writing in English, English Language Teaching, British Literature, Translation Studies, Women Studies, Literary Criticism, Comparative Literature and American Literature. As on today, as many as 103 candidates have obtained Ph. D degrees from the Department and 131 candidates have got M. Phil degrees under the supervision of the staff. The Silver Jubilee Celebrations of the department were held on a grand scale in January 1993. To commemorate the occasion a Souvenir and Abstracts of Kakatiya Dissertations in English Studies (KDES) were published. KDES has referential value as a compendium of research work done at the department during 1976-1992. The work is being updated at regular intervals.
