Andhra Loyola College (ALC) is managed and administered by the members of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). The College was founded in December 1953 at the request of the Catholic Bishops of Andhra Pradesh and opened in July 1954. It was affiliated to Andhra University till December 1976 and to Acharya Nagarjuna University thereafter. It was granted the autonomous status in July 1988 in recognition of its excellent contribution to the cause of education.

The college was established in July 1964 with only undergraduate course in Arts faculty. Starting with 135 students and only one faculty, the college has now acquired a multi-faculty P.G status. Taking into account the importance of women education Shri Ram Richchapal established the college in the memory of his mother Smt. Gauri Devi. The College started as Kalahandi Science College from 18th July 1960 continued as a Pvt. College till 30.11.1961 was taken over by the Government of Orissa on 1.12.1961. It was then renamed as Govt. Science College, Bhawanipatna. With its vertical academic growth the College was conferred with Autonomous Status in 2002 and now it has added a new feather to its cap – the status of “College with Potential for Excellence”. In 2005 the College was accredited by NAAC with Grade "B++".
