Department of Media Sciences
Anna University Chennai is the first university to take up the idea of India’s University Grants Commission to offer MSc Electronic Media programmes. It offers a two-year MSc programme and a five-year integrated MSc programme. These programmes give students a firm foothold in the media industry. They are structured to develop individual skills, knowledge base and creativity of students, at the same time, honing the technical base, for a wide choice of career options.
The department also runs a doctoral programme in Media Studies. Unique to Anna University Chennai, the PhD candidates undergo a phase of coursework in the areas related to their research for one year before starting their research work. The department has four recognized doctoral supervisors specializing in areas such as Educational Communication, Conflict & Media, Journalism, e-Governance, and Children & Media. Starting in July 2008, the Department of Media Sciences offers an MSc programme in Science and Technology Communication, under the funding and supervision of the National Council of Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC) of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.
The Department of Media Sciences was started in 2001 when the present Vice-Chancellor, Dr. D. Viswanathan, was heading the Audio Visual Research Centre (which was later renamed as the Educational Multimedia Research Centre).
