A Post-Graduate course leading to the M.a. Degree in Sociology was first introduced in Andhra University in the year 1964 in the Department of Social Work and Sociology which later became the composite Department of Sociology, Social Work and IRPM. However in the year 1976 a separate and independent department of sociology came into being.
Prof. M.V.Murthy was the Founder Head of the Department. He was succeeded by Prof. K.Ranga Rao under whose able leadership the Department thrived and attained new heights.
Compared to several other University Departments, the Department of Sociology is relatively young in age and small and compact in Faculty strength. The Department at present has three Professors, two Associate Professors and one Research Assistant. There were six U.G.C. Research Associates in the Department, three of whom have been absorbed in the University. The Research Associates have been assisting the Faculty in teaching, research and related activities of the Department.
The department offers a wide spectrum of specialized, optional and common core courses for the Master's degree Sociology, thereby catering to the needs of both academic and social relevance of the discipline. It offers a number of specializations like social demography, industrial sociology, criminology, organizational behavior and gender studies etc.,
In its three decades of existence, the Department has generated about 45 Ph.D. theses and 5 M.Phil dissertations. While two of the Ph.D. theses of the Department have won the Best Thesis awards, another has got a Best Publication title from Calcutta University.
The Department has also the unique distinction of undertaking completing as many as 20 major and minor projects. One of our Faculty members has the distinction of becoming the Vice-Chancellor of Nagarjuna University and is at present the Vice-chancellor of Benaras Hindu University.
The Department organizes summer schools, workshops and conferences from time to time and has got an estimable record of publication of books by the faculty.
