Barasat Government College belongs to a cluster of colleges under the direct administration of the Higher Education Department of the Government of West Bengal. It is funded by the Department and both the faculty and other staff are drawn from respective government services. Its affiliation has been transferred to the West Bengal State University from the University of Calcutta. The college is situated in Barasat, headquarters of the North Twenty Four Paraganas district in the state of West Bengal, well connected to the rest of the state both by road and rail.Barasat Government College was established in 1950 and is affiliated to University of Calcutta. The College is under direct administration of Government of West Bengal. The College works in two shifts. In the morning section only the students of general stream in arts and science studies while the day section accommodates the students of honors course in undergraduate study in arts and science. The day section also consists of the students of postgraduate course in Botany. The Botany postgraduate course commenced during the session 2003-2004. The main building of the college has recently been extended with the financial aid from Government in order to create more space for academic work.
