Birbhum Institute of engineering and Technology, the First Engineering College at degree level, in the District of Birbhum, has completed ten glorious years of its existence in the year 2009. The district has been contributing in its own subtle way, toward the overall growth of the state. Eminent personalities from the district, from diverse fields of life, have been catalyzing its development process. Education has always been the prime component of development for the district. Tagore found his “Santiniketan” here to spread his concept of education world over, through Viswa Bharati University. Birbhum Institute of engineering and Technology was the pioneer in providing quality technocrats from the district.The institute came into existence through earnest dedication of a number of educationists, philantrophist and social workers from the District and outside. ICARE, Birbhum, the parent society behind the shaping of Birbhum Institute of engineering and Technology was formed by eminent personalities like Shri Somnath Chatterjee, (former Speaker of Parliament) Prof. Ramaranjan Mukherji, former Vice-chancellor of two West Bengal Universities and former Chancellor, Tirupati University, Shri Pranab Mukherjee, M.P. (Honourable Minister for Finance, Government of India) Shri Braja Mukherjee, former Sabhadhipati, Birbhum Zilla Parishad, Dr. Ramchandra Dome, M.P., Sk. Islam, former Karmadashkya, Birbhum Zilla Parishad, Shri Apurba Mandal, Karmadashkya, Birbhum Zilla Parishad, and other distinguished personalities from the area.

The Institute started functioning with the prime objective to impart quality technical education, driven by scarcity scenario of the state in the year 1999 after obtaining approval from the All India Council for Technical Education. It is presently affiliated to West Bengal University of Technology. Its Non-profit making objective and benevolent mission prompted various organizations and the Government of West Bengal to provide grants over the years.Situated in a beautiful locale adjoining the Tilpara Barrage and spread over a campus area of around 30 acres, with pleasant hostel ambience, the institute provides an excellent platform for academic excellence.Departments have multiple state of the art workshops and well equipped laboratories. The library is structured to provide academic support to the students at different tiers. This is being achieved with more than 30000 books, large numbers of national and international journal, digital library, best of the e- resources like IEEE, ASME and Books under book-bank scheme. Along with these, availability of high speed broad band internet connectivity makes it possible to acquire basic engineering education and fulfill research aspirations of the students.

Established by Indian Centre for Advancement of Research and Education(ICARE),Birbhum under the Chairmanship of Shri Somnath Chatterjee, Hon'ble Speaker of the 14th Loksabha and Shri Braja Mukherjee(Secretary, ICARE Birbhum), BIET started functioning from 1999 under the Chairmanship of Legendary Indologist and Educationist Professor Padmashri Late Ramaranjan Mukherjee. The Institute is being run as a non-profit organization with active Guidance from eminent academician like Prof. Debabrata Das Gupta, Former VC, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswa Vidalaya (BCKV), West Bengal, who is presently the Chairman of Board of Governors and other social workers and philanthropists from the District and around.

Situated at the sprawling picturesque Techno-Complex of 30 acres at Suri, BIET emerged as the pioneer Engineering Institute in Birbhum. It is proud to receive aids from the Government of West Bengal, Birbhum Zilla Parishad, West Bengal Power Development Corporation (WBPDCL), and M.P.L.A.D. scheme and TEQIP II (MHRD and Word Bank) for the development of the infrastructure and the campus as well as improvement of Teaching and learning facilities.

Vision
To create an institution for higher technical education, dedicated to the cause of developing professionals with high sense of ethical values and commitment to the society , where students shall realise their potentials and learn to be future torch bearers of evolving technologies, through inculcation of proper attitude, appropriation of traditions and heritage and fostering of originality , so as to be capable of functioning without being influenced by malice of caste, creed, political and religious dogmas.
