The Post-Graduate Department of Botany of North Orissa University was established in the year 2004 with one Professor, two Readers and three Lecturers. The Department shifted to its own building on 18th January, 2008. The Department imparts teaching at both M. Sc. and M.Phil. levels. From the academic year 2004-2005, the syllabus which was embraced for Post-Graduation Course was designed as per the recommendations of the University Grants Commission with minor modifications. M.Sc. course, with 25 seats, is programmed for four Semesters. All aspects of plant science such as plant diversity, development and reproduction, Cytogenetics, plant breeding, ecology, angiosperm taxonomy, plant physiology and metabolism, plant resources utilization and conservation, microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, plant biotechnology, biometry, computer application and environmental biology are included in the syllabus. In the fourth semester of M.Sc., a student can opt for any one of the four electives such as biosystematics, environmental biotechnology, industrial microbiology and plant biotechnology. A student is also required to submit a dissertation for partial fulfillment of M.Sc. degree. One-year M.Phil. course, with 10 intake capacity, consisting of two semesters started from the academic year 2007-08, giving emphasis on current advancement in plant science. During the course-work of M.Phil., the students are trained to carry out research work. Preparation of a dissertation is a part of the course work. Teaching is imparted keeping an eye on the syllabus of UGC-CSIR (NET), GATE and Civil services examinations. Besides class room teaching, study tours, field trips and plant exploration and collection trips are organized at regular intervals for better exposure of students. Students are made proficient to speak in weekly seminars on recent developments in life sciences. For the M.Phil. course, the students are well-grounded to survey literature, deliver seminars and design research experiments of the field of their choice. The Department also provides facility for Ph.D. program.
