Anjuman-I-Islam's A. K. Hafizka Institute of Hotel Management & Catering Technology is a major link in the chain of technical institutes established by the Anjuman-I-Islam. Keeping abreast of the new trends in education and ever eager to provide all kinds of educational facilities to the youth of the community Anjuman started this institute to provide high standard professional training in hotel management. Hospitality industry is an important and growing segment of modern economy with attractive employment opportunities. The growing importance of the course may be gauged by the fact that the number of hotel management colleges has increased 4 to over 100 in two decades.

In the large family of Anjuman institutes A. K. Hafizka Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology is a toddler, having been established in 1993. But within a short span of six years it has earned a reputation in the industry circles by virtue of its high standard of education and discipline. All the tree top rankers in the state for the year 1996-97 were from this institute. It has been registering a very high pass rate ranging from 90 to 95 percent with 60 to 70 percent of the students securing a first class. For the current year 1998-99 a 100 percent success is expected, Insha Allah. So far the institute has produced about 200 diploma holders in hotels management who are well placed in various hotels and other organizations in India and abroad. The institute is approved by All India Council for Technical Education, New Delhi an affiliated to Maharashtra State's Board of Technical Examination.

The late Mr. Abdul Khader Hafizka was a former president of the Anjuman-I-Islam and a prominent nationalist Muslim leader. To commemorate his services to the Anjuman and the community, Anjuman-I-Islam named this institute after him.

In the beginning the institute did not have a proper accommodation as a result of which classes had to be conducted in different buildings in the Anjuman Complex. But now it proudly occupies three floors of a newly constructed five-storey building within the Anjuman Complex near Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus (V.T.) of Mumbai. The Anjuman has taken care to provide all the facilities for the proper training of our students.

The institute is running to its full capacity with a total of 173 students - 59 in the first year, 60 in the second and 54 in the third year. About 20 percent of them are girls. It is heartening to note that more and more Muslim students, even girls, are opting for the course. About 20 percent of the students are Muslims.

The institute offers a three-year diploma course in hotel management and catering technology. The diploma is awarded by the Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education. The medium of instruction is English and the minimum qualification required for admission is Standard XII pass with 50 percent marks for the open category seats and 45 percent marks for the reserved category (SC/ST).

The Mumbai University is planning to start a full-fledged degree course in hotel management. This will immensely benefit our students by improving their job status.

The president of the Anjuman-I-Islam Dr. M. Ishaq Jamkhanawala has strictly enforced two policy decisions in the functioning of all Anjuman institutes. One, keep the fees low so that technical and higher education becomes accessible to students from the middle and lower income groups and two, take no donation for admission. Accordingly, the institute charges very low fees. Technical education is a costly affair. Yet, we charge the lowest fees in Mumbai. The institute takes absolutely no donation for admission which is decided strictly on merits. It is an educational institute in the true sense while others have acquired the label of a commercial organization with accent on profit making.

It is a gruelling three-year course with classes conducted six days a week from nine in the morning to five in the evening. During he summer holidays students are sent to reputed hotels for training. In addition to the regular classes, students are required to undertake field work, industrial training, practical assignments and projects. during the course students are trained practically in every department of a big hotel. The training covers food production, food and beverage service, front office, housekeeping, nutrition, hotel engineering, accounts, management, business practice and law. Thus, a successful student is fully geared to manage any department of a big hotel or o start his own business.

The good reputation of the institute and its high rate of success are the results of the dedication of its staff members, state-of-the-art training facilities and a high degree of discipline. The management is very particular, in fact strict, about attendance, discipline and the grooming standard of the students.

The institute is managed by a team of 30 members including 18 experienced teaching staff headed by a principal. In addition, it has a panel of guest lecturers from top hotels such as Taj, Oberoi and Holiday Inn.

The institute is fully equipped with the infrastructure required by a modern institute of this nature. It has a basic kitchen, advanced kitchen, quantity kitchen, air-conditioned training restaurant and bar, housekeeping department, front office department, dining hall, auditorium, library and computer room. These days even a chef is required to work on a computer. Therefore, the institute has set up a computer room with 12 computers with multimedia facilities.

The institute believes that its responsibilities towards students do not end with the awarding of diplomas. It helps the students in finding suitable jobs. For this purpose it has initiated two programmes - a Placement Directory and Campus Interview. Every year it publishes of its final year students and sends it to hotels and other organizations all over the country, which then call the required students for jobs. At the end of each academic year it organises a Campus Interview to which officials from the hospitality industry are invited. During the Campus Interview employers chooses candidates and students select employers of their liking.

A major attraction of the institute is its annual Theme Dinner programme which is organised mainly by the students. Last year it was called "Konakn Railway - The Food Fiesta" in which food items from the four states - Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka and Kerala - through which the Konkan Railway passes were presented.

To encourage the students Anjuman has instituted prizes and scholarships in the form of three gold medals, five rolling trophies and several scholarships to be awarded to meritorious students.

Speaking about the institute Mr. B. P. Sahni, Principal of the institute since 1996, stated, "The institute is aiming at excellence and expansion. Excellence is ensured by the state-of-the-art training facilities and the dedication of our experienced faculty. As part of our expansion programme we have prepared two projects. One of them relates to a tie-up with a reputed western university and the other relates to the introduction of new course in the related field, such as a course in Master of Tourism Management". This institute is ably looked after by the Executive Chairman Mr. Sami Khatib and the members of Anjuman-I-Islam's Board for Professional Education..

At Present we only offer a Three-Year Diploma in Hotel Management & Catering Technology.
