About CLAT 2026-2027: Exam Dates, Application Form, Syllabus, Pattern, Admit Card, Cutoff & Result

The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is Indiaโ€™s premier national-level entrance examination conducted by the Consortium of National Law Universities (Consortium of NLUs). It serves as the gateway for admissions to undergraduate five-year integrated law programmes (such as B.A. LL.B. Hons., B.B.A. LL.B. Hons., B.Sc. LL.B. Hons., B.Com. LL.B. Hons., and B.S.W. LL.B. Hons.) and postgraduate one-year Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree programmes across 24 participating National Law Universities as well as dozens of affiliated private law schools and public sector undertakings (PSUs).

CLAT is administered annually in offline pen-and-paper mode using OMR answer sheets across more than 130 cities nationwide. The examination evaluates a candidate's aptitude, analytical reasoning, and reading comprehension through reading comprehension-based passages rather than rote memorization. For CLAT 2027, the examination is officially scheduled for Sunday, 6 December 2026 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM IST.

Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to common queries regarding CLAT

Q1Does CLAT UG require prior knowledge of law or legal terms?
No prior knowledge of law is required. The Legal Reasoning section provides the applicable legal principles and rules within the passage itself; candidates only need to apply those stated rules to the accompanying factual scenarios.
Q2What is the negative marking scheme for CLAT 2026-2027?
Each correct answer carries +1 mark, while each wrong answer incurs a negative deduction of 0.25 marks (-0.25). Unattempted questions carry zero marks.
Q3What subjects carry the maximum weightage in CLAT PG (LLM)?
Constitutional Law and Jurisprudence carry the highest combined weightage in CLAT PG, typically accounting for nearly 40% to 50% of the entire paper, followed by Criminal Law, Contracts, and Torts.
Q4How many questions are asked in the current CLAT exam pattern?
The CLAT exam pattern consists of 120 passage-based multiple choice questions (MCQs) carrying 1 mark each, to be completed in 120 minutes (2 hours).
Q5Where can I download authentic CLAT previous year question papers?
Authentic previous year question papers with provisional and final answer keys can be downloaded directly from the Consortium of NLUs portal (consortiumofnlus.ac.in) and curated archives on IndCareer.
Q6Should I solve CLAT papers from before 2020?
Yes, but primarily for foundational drills in vocabulary, grammar, and basic quantitative problems. For full-length timed mocks, prioritize papers from 2020 onwards which follow the contemporary comprehension passage-based pattern.
Q7When is the CLAT 2026-2027 admit card released?
The Consortium of NLUs typically releases the CLAT admit card in mid-November, roughly 2 to 3 weeks ahead of the examination date.
Q8What should I do if there is a mistake in my CLAT admit card?
If you detect any spelling error, mismatch in category, or unreadable photo/signature on your admit card, contact the Consortium Help Desk immediately via email at [email protected] or their official contact numbers.
Q9Can I show a digital copy of the admit card on my mobile phone at the centre?
No. Mobile phones are strictly prohibited inside the exam centre, and a physical hard copy printout of the admit card is mandatory for entry.
Q10How much is the fee for challenging an answer in the CLAT provisional key?
Candidates must pay an objection fee of โ‚น1,000 per question challenged. If the expert committee accepts the challenge and modifies or withdraws the question, the objection fee is refunded.
Q11What happens if a question is withdrawn in the final answer key?
If the Consortium withdraws a defective question, evaluation is performed out of the remaining valid questions (e.g., out of 118 or 119 instead of 120), adjusting the candidate raw scores proportionally.
Q12Can the CLAT final answer key be challenged?
No. The Consortium does not entertain any objections or representations against the Final Answer Key once published by the expert committee.
Q13How long is the CLAT scorecard valid?
The CLAT scorecard is valid strictly for one academic year, applicable for admissions into the ensuing academic session.
Q14How is a tie in marks resolved in CLAT UG?
Ties in CLAT UG are resolved first by comparing marks in the Legal Reasoning section. If the tie persists, the candidate older in age gets the higher rank, followed by a computerized draw of lots.
Q15What is the counselling registration fee for CLAT?
The counselling registration fee is โ‚น30,000 for General category candidates and โ‚น20,000 for SC, ST, OBC, BC, EWS, and PwD candidates. This amount is adjustable against university tuition fees upon seat acceptance.
Q16What rank is needed in CLAT to get into NLSIU Bengaluru for General category?
For General All India category candidates, admission to NLSIU Bengaluru typically closes between All India Rank (AIR) 90 and 105.
Q17What is the difference between Opening Rank and Closing Rank?
The Opening Rank (OR) is the highest rank at which a candidate was admitted to an NLU in a specific round, while the Closing Rank (CR) is the lowest rank admitted to that course/category in that round.
Q18Do state domicile reservations lower the required CLAT cutoff rank?
Yes. NLUs that offer state domicile quotas allow local state candidates to secure admission at significantly lower rank percentiles compared to General All India applicants.
