Dayalbagh Educational Institute has been a pioneer institution in encouraging women and rural masses to participate in wider social activities by conducting various extension and welfare programmes. The programmes for removal of illiteracy among rural youth were initially started by D.E.I. Women’s Training College and D.E.I. Radhasoami Educational Institute in 1978. These programmes were combined by the Institute when DEI was conferred the status of a Deemed to be a University in 1981.

These were part of the erstwhile Faculty of Arts up till May1994. In July 1994, when the Faculty of Social Sciences assumed its independent status, the two departments were merged to form a new Department of Sociology and Political Science to make it organizationally more viable. Since 1994 the department has been running under the auspices of the Faculty of Social Sciences. Since 1995-96 Honours courses were introduced in both the disciplines.
