    COLLEGE

The Punjab Engineering College was founded as the Maclagan Engineering College, Lahore way back in the pre-partition days. At the time of the partition of the country in 1947, the college was renamed as "East Punjab Engineering College" and functioned from the Thomson Engineering College, Roorkee (now known as the University of Roorkee). In the year 1950, the word "EAST" was dropped and the college was renamed as Punjab Engineering College. Towards the end of December, 1953, the college shifted to its present premises at Chandigarh and is functioning here since then. This year the PEC enters into its Golden Jubilee Year in independent India.

The college campus extends over an area of 146 acres, situated close to the beautiful Shivalik Hills range and presents a spectacle of harmony in modern architecture and natural beauty. The campus area has been divided into various functional zones like the Academic zone for academic buildings and workshops, the Residential zone for faculty and other staff, the Residential zone for students and the Cultural cum social recreational zone for the students . The campus provides several essential amenities for community living like a modest shopping centre, a community centre, a bank, a post office, students' activities centre, gymnasium, swimming pool, playing fields, etc.

    ACADEMIC PROFILE

The college is affiliated to the Panjab University, Chandigarh and offers a wide range of academic programmes at the undergraduate, the postgraduate and the research levels.

Facilities for research programmes leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in selected areas of Engineering and Applied Sciences also exist.

The curriculum forms the core of the educational process. The college pays particular attention towards periodic review of the curriculum in order to keep pace with the rapid advances in knowledge and also to maintain the quality of education.

The college is conscious of its responsibility in the changing techno-economic environment of the country and, therefore, has recently started a programme in collaboration with the CEDT, on "Electronic Products Design and Technology". A thrust area project proposal "Establishment of CIM Training Cell" has also been approved by the AICTE.

On going rapid developments all over the world make it imperative that teachers and working engineers be continuously exposed to the latest trends in technology so as to enable them to meet new challenges in teaching as well as in practice. The Punjab Engineering College pays particular attention to continuing education for not only the teachers but also for all other categories of staff. This is important for providing career growth opportunities as well as to keep the staff abreast of the latest developments in various fields, thereby reducing obsolescence in their work environment, particularly in teaching.

The college has taken the life membership of NAFEN Continuing Education Programme, besides being a member of ISTE. The college also participates in programmes of other professional societies.

In the present scenario of ever widening horizons of knowledge and interdisciplinary activities, it is essential that experts from different walks of life come together and join hands for mutual benefits. Active interaction of teachers of technical institutions with working engineers is of special importance in this context. These measures are essential to boost and sustain the technical and economic growth of the country. The extension programme of the PEC provides a social interface between academicians and the public at large in diverse fields.

Research programmes of various departments are also a source of such interaction.
