The Department of Botany is one of the most oldest departments in the University. Eminent Scientists like Dr. A. Gnanam, Dr. K.M. Marimuthu, Dr. G. Kulandaivelu and Dr. M. Vivekanandan are the Alumni of the Botany Department. Department has been sponsored with UGC-SAP (Rs. 69 lakhs) and DST-FIST (Rs. 74.50 lakhs). The department is offering Botany and Herbal Science at M.Sc., M.Phil., and Ph.D levels. Response of plants to music was researched by a former Professor T.C.N. Singh who headed the Department during 1950s. Till date, 36 students have been awarded Ph.D. degree and 65 students are doing their Ph.D programmes in various frontier areas of plant science. Faculty members have published more than 350 research articles in various international journals of repute.
