Department of Biotechnology

The Department of Biotechnology was started in the year 2001. The department offers a two year M. Sc., Degree Course in Biotechnology with specialization in Marine Biotechnology from the Academic year 2002 - 2003. Doctoral programme leading to Ph.D. is also being offered at the department. The department is undertaking research projects of national importance in the field of biotechnology and attracted funds from various agencies such as Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Department of Science and Technology (DST), University Grants Commission (UGC), Dredging Corporation of India (for the Environmental Impact Monitoring of Sethusamudram Ship Channel Project (SSCP)) and Tamil Nadu State Council for Science & Technology (TNSCS&T).

Facilities :

The department has separate lab facilities for teaching (M. Sc.,) and research programmes. The research lab is well equipped with the state of the art instruments. The Lecture halls of M. Sc., Students are provided with OHP, LCD & Computers to make presentations more interactive. Besides that the computers in the department are connected under LAN and provided with regular internet connectivity to make students and staff updated with recent innovations.
