Padmaja Naidu College of Music was established as a Govt. Sponsored Degree College, being affiliated to the University of Burdwan, at Rajbati, Burdwan, in June 1975.Padmaja Naidu College of Music is the unfolding history of an idea, whose time had come. The record of its development now spans over 10 years during which a potent concept has had considerable impact on the educational and cultural life of Burdwan.

Padmaja Naidu College of Music grew out of ‘Institute of Music’ founded in 1965, by then Governor of West Bengal, Late Padmaja Naidu who had expressed her desire to set up such an Institute at Burdwan with the object of developing a centre of higher training and research in music which should be progressively advance to serve the Burdwan area. The Institute of Music had been set up as a Govt. sponsored Institute in collaboration with the University of Burdwan, at Rajbati with the University campus in the year 1965. Necessary accommodation was provided by the University of Burdwan. This Institute of Music was upgraded to a Govt. Sponsored Degree College with effect from June, 1965 and subsequently has been renamed as “Padmaja Naidu College of Music” in the secured memory Late Padmaja Naidu.
Padmaja Naidu College of Music has fulfilled a long felt want to Burdwan by providing opportunities for higher training in music; by instilling awareness of human dignity in cultural creativity and musical education of man which are regarded as part and parcel of education not only in India but all over the world.

When the ideas and values of music have taken on new significance in educational life, when there are departments of music in almost all the Universities of the world, the University of Burdwan has also felt the necessity introducing the courses of music in its field of education and as such has provided accommodation and granted affiliation in the Padmaja Naidu College of Music.You are aware that in past this college was graced by the services of famous singers and artists like Late Pandit Dhrubra Tara Joshi, Pandit Rabi Sankarji, Late Ustad Villayet Khan Saheb, Late Nikhil Bandyopadhyay, Pandit Aloke Chattopadhyay, Pandit Arun Bhauri, Sri Biram Mukhopadhyay, Sri Amar Pal, Smt. Maya Sen, Late Smt. Nilima Sen, Dr. Gobinda Gopal Mukhopadhyay etc.
