The Department of Remote Sensing & Geographical Information System was founded in 2003. From the very beginning the department has been involved in teaching and undertaking research in all disciplines of Geography, Environmental Science, Geology, Geophysics. The alumni of this Department have occupied responsible positions in India and abroad. It is one of the first Remote Sensing & Geographical Information System department in West Bengal to start the course of Remote Sensing and GIS at PG and Doctoral levels. Several Remote Sensing and GIS related Research and Consultancy Projects have been undertaken by the faculty of the Department.

Why Remote Sensing & GIS?

There has been a rapid growth in the use of digital spatial data in many areas of resource management and the environmental sciences. This course aims to develop both a solid theoretical understanding and a comprehensive practical introduction to the use of geographic information systems and simple modelling using digital spatial data and in decision support. On the satisfactory completion of this course, students will have completed realistic hydrological, erosion, conservation, wildlife habitat, forest, agriculture, fire and building economic models within the geographic information system. The integration of these components will be carried out using Multi-criteria Evaluation and Multiple Objective Land Use Allocation models within the GIS.
