Department Of History

The Department of History was established in 1989, with two whole-time teachers and 80 students. It now has six faculty positions, 1 Professor, 1 Reader, and 4 Lecturers. At present, 16 Guest teachers assist in the teaching programme of the Department. Each class now has a capacity of 106 students. Admission is done strictly on the basis of merit. As a Post graduate department, it draws students from among Honours graduates of mainly affiliated colleges of the districts of Paschim and Purba Medinipur; the Department is thus able to attract the meritorious students of the area
New inclusion from the emerging fields in curriculum :

The tendency of the Department to follow the directives of the University Grants Commission and to keep up with the latest trends in teaching and research was brought out by the fact that full papers on Historiography and Social History of Science and Technology were included in the syllabus drawn up in 2001. The syllabus has been revised once more this year, i.e. 2008; the format is now that of the semester system. It includes, among others, a paper on Environmental History and another on South-Western Bengal. The emphasis is, as always in the past, on Social History and Local History. Each time, experts on different fields, and from various universities of West Bengal, were consulted to draw up the final syllabi.
