NATIONAL BOTANICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE was established in the year 1953,
The National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI) is one of the Constituent National Laboratories and institutes of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi. Originally set up as the National Botanic Gardens (NBG) by the Government of Uttar Pradesh in 1948, it was taken over by the CSIR in 1953. In keeping with the national needs and priorities, the NBG went on laying increasing emphasis on its applied and developmental research activities and it was felt that the name National Botanic Gardens no longer reflected the correct nature and extent of its functions and research activities. Consequently, the NBG was renamed as the NATIONAL BOTANICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE in 1978. This name correctly projects the distinctive character and the R&D activities of this only applied botanical organization of its type. The Institute regularly undertakes research programmes in collaboration with national and international organizations and has several such collaborative programmes in hand, viz., Indo-US Biomass Research Programme, DST-sponsored Biomass Research Centre, DOEN-sponsored project on air-pollution and plants, Ministry of Rural Development-sponsored project on water pollution, CCRUM-sponsored project on indigenous herbal drugs, All India Coordinated Project on Ethnobiology, and a few others.
NBRI is a premier plant based multidisciplinary, state-of-art national R&D Centre of CSIR undertaking research from classical taxonomy to cutting edge areas of modern biology-including both applied and basic research in the fields of biochemistry, bioinformatics, biotechnology, conservation biology, cytogenetics, environmental sciences, ethnopharmacology, floriculture, microbiology, molecular biology and genetic engineering, pharmacognosy, pharmacy, physiology, phytochemistry, plant biodiversity, plant breeding, taxonomy and tree biology, for the conservation and sustainable utilization of the non crop plant genetic resources of the country.
NATIONAL BOTANICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE offers various graduate courses as well as Post Graduate courses.
