University of Jammu, Jammu Department Of Economics The Department of Economics is one of the oldest Departments of the University. It was established in 1956 under the auspices of Jammu and Kashmir University. The Department with four members of Faculty Membersfunctioned till 1968. The Department received fillip when the Jammu division of the Jammu and Kashmir University was elevated to the status of a full- fledged University and the University of Jammu came into existence in 1969. By the year 1978, the status of teaching and research in the department had risen considerably and the UGC recognized this department of the University among twelve other universities for Faculty improvement programme. This elevation of the department attracted students from all parts of the country to undertake their M. Phil and Ph.D. courses in this department. Computer Lab During the eighties, the department completed a number of research projects financed by the UGC and ICSSR. In the year 1987, the UGC included the department in "Department Research Support Programme" and three research projects on different aspects of the J&K economy were granted to the department.
