The Department was established in 2010. It strives for blending theoretical knowledge with empirical analysis, anchoring itself in strong field based research, especially on Eastern Himalayas. The Department houses a high end GIS laboratory for exposing the students to the art of spatial analysis. The faculty members are enthusiastic to share their understanding of cryosphere, interactions between environment, society and economy, political geography of North-east India, social-spatial exclusions, urban governance and tourism geography.
The Department in collaboration with Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES) organized an International Seminar on Climate Change and sustainability in the Mountain Areas: Scope and Challenges for Regional Cooperation and Integration, 7 – 9 November, 2011, Gangtok.
