The Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical and Technological Sciences, established in 1995, is the first government-private initiative in the region. It is recognized by the University Grants Commission [1] and approved by the Government of India. It is a branch of the Manipal University in Manipal, Karnataka. Sikkim Manipal University (SMU) is a unique private-government partnership in the field of higher education between the Manipal Group and the Government of Sikkim. This university was established with the objective of providing the best in education for students in East India. SMU has two constituent institutes - Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS) and Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology (SMIT). These two institutes were established with the mission of providing excellent educational opportunities for the young minds of Sikkim.

The Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS), located at Tadong, is a constituent college of the Sikkim Manipal University (SMU). SMIMS offers MBBS, Nursing and Physiotherapy courses, besides M.Sc. programs in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Physiology and Anatomy. The Central Referral Hospital and STNM Hospital in Gangtok offer clinical training opportunities to students

It is located 8 km (5 miles) before (below) Gangtok, Sikkim on the National Highway (NH) 31A, at a place called Tadong 5 mile. It is about 4 kms after (above) Ranipool, overlying the river Ranikhola. It is one of the most well known universities in India imparting distance education in various disciplines.
We believe education can make a positive difference to the youth belonging to the North East and we consistently strive towards making education more accessible without compromising on the quality of delivery. The University has designed special fee waiver for students of Sikkim and the North East region. The fee waiver benefit of 30% (Thirty percent) were announced during the 14th Annual Convocation.
Candidates from states of Sikkim, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Meghalaya Manipur, Tripura and Mizoram having valid address proof, may avail the fee waiver benefit.
Differently abled personnel can avail a 30% fee concession under the Divyang scholarship scheme. The scholarship opportunities were announced in 2016 and can be availed by family members/dependents of the candidates too.
A valid certificate from an authorised doctor is mandatory to avail the scholarship.

We feel their achievements and exemplary contribution to the country must not only be acknowledged, but also be celebrated. As a mark of respect to their contributions and to boost the educational empowerment of Indian Armed Forces, Sikkim Manipal University Directorate of Distance Education (SMU-DE) will be offering concession on fees to the in-service, retired and outgoing officers of the Indian Armed Forces.
To take the University’s initiatives forward and to appreciate the commitment of the Armed Forces, Indian Coast Guard and Paramilitary Forces (CRPF, BSF, CISF), SMU-DE will be offering a concession of 30% on the tuition fee of our educational courses to all defence personnel and their family members.
