State the order of the surds given below.

State which of the following are surds Justify. [2 Marks each]

Answer:
i. 51−−√3 is a surd because 51 is a positive rational number, 3 is a positive integer greater than 1 and 51−−√3 is irrational.

ii. 16−−√4 is not a surd because

= 2, which is not an irrational number.

iii. 81−−√5 is a surd because 81 is a positive rational number, 5 is a positive integer greater than 1 and 81−−√5 is irrational.

iv. 256−−−√ is not a surd because

= 16, which is not an irrational number.

v. 64−−√3 is not a surd because

= 4, which is not an irrational number.

vi. 227−−√ is a surd because 227 is a positive rational number, 2 is a positive integer greater than 1 and 227−−√ is irrational.

Question 3.
Classify the given pair of surds into like surds and unlike surds. [2 Marks each]

Solution:
If the order of the surds and the radicands are same, then the surds are like surds.

Here, the order of 213−−√ and 513−−√ is same and their radicands are also same.
∴ 52−−√ and 513−−√ are like surds.

Here, the order of 217−−√ and 53–√ is same but their radicands are not.
∴ 68−−√ and 53–√ are unlike surds.

Here, the order of 122–√ and 72–√ is same and their radicands are also same.
∴ 418−−√ and 72–√ are like surds.

Here, the order of 383–√ and 63–√ is same and their radicands are also same.
∴ 1912−−√ and 63–√ are like surds.

v. 522−−√, 733−−√
Here, the order of 522−−√ and 733−−√ is same but their radicands are not.
∴ 522−−√ and 733−−√ are unlike surds.

Here, the order of 5√5 and 5√3 is same but their radicands are not.
∴ 5√5 and √75 are unlike surds.

About Maharashtra State Board (MSBSHSE)

The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education or MSBSHSE (Marathi: महाराष्ट्र राज्य माध्यमिक आणि उच्च माध्यमिक शिक्षण मंडळ), is an autonomous and statutory body established in 1965. The board was amended in the year 1977 under the provisions of the Maharashtra Act No. 41 of 1965.

The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary & Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE), Pune is an independent body of the Maharashtra Government. There are more than 1.4 million students that appear in the examination every year. The Maha State Board conducts the board examination twice a year. This board conducts the examination for SSC and HSC.

The Maharashtra government established the Maharashtra State Bureau of Textbook Production and Curriculum Research, also commonly referred to as Ebalbharati, in 1967 to take up the responsibility of providing quality textbooks to students from all classes studying under the Maharashtra State Board. MSBHSE prepares and updates the curriculum to provide holistic development for students. It is designed to tackle the difficulty in understanding the concepts with simple language with simple illustrations. Every year around 10 lakh students are enrolled in schools that are affiliated with the Maharashtra State Board.
